How to Use Google's Keyword Planner

Google Ads is a great platform to be on for several reasons, but did you know that Google gives you tools to help you get your campaign right from the start? By using data from Keyword Planner, you can create ad groups, keywords, and determine how much you should bid. Here’s how.

Open Keyword Planner. After logging into your Google Ads account, navigate to Tools & Settings in the top right corner of the page and click. Once the menu opens, you’ll find a link to your account’s Keyword Planner on the left-hand side.

Start by clicking “discover new keywords”. Here you can enter some keywords you have in mind or get some inspiration from a web page. The results will show you keyword ideas, average CPC, competitiveness, and other metrics that can help you build your campaign.

Adjust your location, if necessary. If your campaign is only targeting certain locations, fine-tune your results by changing the location. Doing so will give you data based on your specific locations.

Select your keywords. Using the data provided, choose keywords, match type, and create your ad group. Try to keep your keywords as similar as possible. When keywords, ads, and landing pages use the same keywords, conversions typically increase. More on that in another article.

Refine your ad group using the ad groups and keywords on the left-hand menu. Under ad groups, you may adjust your ad group’s max CPC. Under keywords, you may add keywords, remove keywords, and adjust individual CPCs. Note that your plan’s forecast will change as you make adjustments.

Review the historical metrics to make sure your campaign is on track. Even though you’ve already reviewed the historical data when you were discovering new keywords, checking here now that you’ve been able to refine your ad group is helpful and can help ensure you’re maximizing your ad spend.

Name your plan and create your campaign. Once you’re happy with the plan you’ve built, it’s time to name it and create a campaign. You may continue to edit the campaign after this step under campaigns.

There you have it- that’s how to use Google’s Keyword Planner to build your campaign!
